Description:General overview - Thalassotherapy, using coastal environments for therapeutic purposes, is gaining scientific validation. Recent studies show that just 20 minutes of walking by the sea can significantly reduce salivary cortisol levels, indicating decreased stress. In coastal Belgium, where one in three residents is over 65, wearable technologies now track physiological responses such as heart rate variability and skin conductance. PhD researcher Julia Kinet (BGRL, Ghent University) will present data on how prolonged coastal exposure positively influences autonomic nervous system activity and cognitive performance in older adults, supporting integrating thalasso practices into preventive health strategies.
