Wednesday 14 May - Healthy Ageing vs multimorbidities in a digital world

Daily Partners: WHO/EURO Ageing and Health programme, Healthy ageing section

Daily message

Life expectancy in Europe is among the highest globally, with older adults outnumbering younger generations for the first time since 2024. This is a success and a testament of public health action - A longer life brings with it opportunities, not only for older people and their families, but also for societies as a whole. Yet the extent of these opportunities and contributions depends heavily on one factor: health. Unfortunately, evidence suggests that many of these years gained are lived in poor health, in some cases with multiple chronic conditions. Much of this can be prevented through interventions in the physical and social environments.

On the other hand, all people will need care at some point during their lives. The importance of strengthening care and support systems for all, but particularly for health systems to adapt to provide care for older persons cannot be underestimated.

How can we promote healthy ageing while effectively providing care to better manage multimorbidities? What role do digital tools play in enhancing healthcare access and self-care for older adults? How can we close the digital gap to ensure no one is left behind?

Sub-themes

  • Preventing disease and promoting healthy ageing.
  • Managing multimorbidities in older adults.
  • Digital health solutions for ageing populations.
  • Bridging the digital gap in care for older people.
  • Social inclusion and mental well-being in later life.
  • Policies for sustainable and inclusive ageing.
  • Innovation for independent and active ageing.
  • Optimizing care for older adults and people with multimorbidities

By combining digital advancements with holistic, person-centered care, we can create a future where ageing is not just about living longer—but living well.
