Dear EUPHA Public Health Economics (EUPHA-ECO) members,

First of all we would like to wish a great 2024 to all EUPHA-ECO members and share that many news will come this year, including workshops and specific working groups!

The organised sessions of 2023 and the EPH pre-conference were a success and we would like to count on your interest and involvement to expand the section and its contributions for 2024.

For those new to the section, besides announcing the upcoming sessions, this newsletter includes (1) news on European health systems and policies; (2) job positions; and (3) recent published papers. Feel free to share with us further updates, positions and papers!

News on European health systems and policies

#1 - Recently, the European Commission, the OECD and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies released 29 Country Health Profiles covering EU Member States, Iceland, and Norway. These profiles offer insights into each country's health system challenges, policy developments, and responses post-COVID-19, including a synthesis of health status, determinants, system organisation and effectiveness.

#2 - The European Parliament has endorsed the European Health Data Space (EHDS) creation for streamlined personal health data access. The EHDS empowers individuals over their health data, enabling secure sharing for altruistic and research purposes. The legislation provides EU-wide patient access to health data and allows professionals access as needed. It establishes national health data services with quality and security rules. EHDS also allows sharing aggregated health data for public interest, excluding advertising and insurance assessment.

#3 - The European Commission and the European Medicines Agency introduced the first EU list of critical medicines, comprising over 200 vital substances. This list aids in assessing product vulnerability and securing supply chains to prevent shortages. Designation as critical emphasises the medicine's pivotal role in ensuring quality healthcare and public health protection in Europe. While not predicting imminent shortages, the list underscores the need to prevent potential scarcity for patient well-being. Annual reviews will support vulnerability analysis and recommended measures for resilient supply chains, with collaboration between the Commission, Member States, and stakeholders.
