News on European health systems and policies

#1 - The European Commission unveiled a plan on October 24th to combat medicine shortages, featuring a European Voluntary Solidarity Mechanism, a critical medicines list by end-2023, and regulatory flexibility. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) introduced a solidarity mechanism, and ongoing discussions in the Parliament and Council will shape further actions under the pharmaceutical strategy.

#2 - On October 23rd, the EU Council officially approved a directive aimed at enhancing worker protection from asbestos-related health risks. This directive, the final step in the legislative process, not only strengthens safeguards but also improves early asbestos fiber detection using new technologies (active 20 days after publication; Member states have 2 years to integrate it into national legislation).

#3 - The European Commission, European Investment Bank (EIB), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced a €1.1 billion partnership to combat polio and improve global healthcare access. This initiative, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, will allocate €500 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, €500 million for health innovation accessibility and pandemic preparedness, and €80 million for technical assistance in optimising global health programs.
