It is our pleasure to update you in this April newsletter with updates on EUPHA, our members, the European Public Health Week, interesting publications, conferences and the latest news from ECDC, European Commission and WHO Regional office for Europe.

2. EUPHA update
EUPHA Working group on gender equality and Women Empowerment
On International Women’s Day, the formation was anounced of a new Working Group (WG) at EUPHA – European Public Health Association. The WG on #GenderEquality and on Women’s Empowerment will focus on capturing the perspectives of all EUPHA Sections to comprehensively map the needs, the priorities and key actioning areas in European and global public health to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, and meet the United Nations #SDG5. #EUPHA4SDG5 #IWD2021 #WomenInLeadership Mindful of the need to support gender equality and the empowerment of all women, we aim to develop a comprehensive strategy to be released in April 2021. We welcome the input and the involvement of EUPHA members and of everyone active in European and global public health, or in related efforts across sectors.
New EUPHA Law and public health section (EUPHA-LAW)
There is a growing recognition that law as a discipline has a major role to play in framing effective public health strategies and interventions to promote and prevent public’s health. To respond to this, EUPHA has established a new Law and public health section (https://eupha.org/law-and-public-health). Professor Amandine Garde (University of Liverpool) has been elected as President of the section. The section will be launched on 20th May 2021, 15.00 to 17.00 CEST (Brussels time).

EUPHA joins the Beating Cancer Stakeholder Group
EUPHA has joined the Beating Cancer Stakeholder Contact Group on the Health Policy Platform. The working group will likely focus on the four pillars of the Plan, and will support its implementation. We are looking forward to the many fruitful discussions with other network members.
European Journal of Public Health goes for Open Access
EUPHA’s scientific journal – the European Journal of Public Health – will go fully Open Access as of 1 January 2022. In order to prepare for this change, the Open Access fee will apply to all articles submitted on or after the 1st of June 2021 (if accepted for publication). On April 21, 2021, the Children in All Policies 2030 (CAP-2030) was launched, with the support of WHO, UNICEF, and The Lancet. Joint Statement on European Immunization Week 2021: Celebrating the past, present and future benefits of vaccines
On the occasion of European Immunization Week 2021, Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Hans Henri P. Kluge, Regional Director, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, and Afshan Khan, Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), made a joint statement.
Further crucial step for the Digital Green Certificate: Member States agree on technical specifications
The agreed technical specification covers data structure and encoding mechanisms, describes the EU gateway, and describes reference implementations for software to issue Digital Green Certificates.
Mental health and the pandemic: registration open for European Commission event
Registration is now open to hear the voice of those affected, including people with pre-existing mental health problems and those providing care. Whilst policies and services addressing mental health are the responsibility of individual EU countries, this event will share examples and promising practices, exploring what we know and what we need to understand better, and discuss how to ensure that our health systems are well enough equipped, today and in the future.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) kicked off a new initiative aimed at strengthening post-marketing monitoring of the safety, effectiveness and impact of COVID-19 vaccines in the EU/EEA.
