Dear colleagues,

we are sharing with you some great opportunities and challenges for the European public health epidemiology community.

Call for Abstracts: 18th European Public Health Conference – ONLY FEW WEEKS LEFT

Join us in Helsinki, Finland, from 11 to 14 November 2025 for the 18th European Public Health Conference. This year’s theme, “Investing for Sustainable Health and Well-Being,” will explore how strategic investments in health can create long-term benefits for individuals, communities, and societies. Single abstracts for public health epidemiology topics are welcome (select “Public health epidemiology and genomics” as main or second topic in the submission menu). Please submit your abstract by 1 May 2025 at 18:00 CET through the conference website: https://ephconference.eu/abstract-submission-10. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your work, learn from experts, and connect with colleagues from different disciplines and countries.

However, this year, we are offering also the possibility to be included in EUPHA-EPI organised sessions and are looking specifically for abstracts (research or innovative practices) in the following fields to organize interesting symposia:

  • Causal inference and mediation analysis
  • Reproducibility and open science
  • Scientific integrity and peer review skills building
  • Synthetic data and data sharing
  • Health policy evaluation (use cases and methodological challenges)
  • Evaluation of complex public health programmes
  • Translational and implementation research
  • Data sources
  • AI in epidemiology
  • Vaccine hesitancy epidemiology

EUPHA-EPI organised session abstract submission timeline:

  • 20 April 2025 – Deadline to submit abstracts to the section president (Angelo Maria Pezzullo, email: angelo.pezzullo@unicatt.it).
  • 20 – 25 April 2025 – Review and organization of abstracts into symposium/workshop themes by EUPHA-EPI leadership team (president and VPs). Feedback provided if necessary.
  • 25 – 30 April 2025 – Finalization of symposium/workshop proposals. Authors not included in symposia are advised to submit individually.
  • 1 May 2025 – EPH Conference individual abstract submission deadline.

If you submit your abstract to the section, please do not also submit it via the official EPH Conference submission system. We will notify you by 25 April if your abstract is included in a section symposium proposal. If not, you will still have time to submit your abstract individually before the 1 May deadline. All symposia/workshops and individual abstracts will be evaluated by the EPH International Scientific Committee before final acceptance into the conference programme.

Protect European Health – Save EU4Health Civil Society Grants

Urgent support needed: delays in adopting the 2025 EU4Health Work Plan are threatening EUPHA and vital public health initiatives across Europe. Despite signing a Framework Partnership Agreement in November 2024, expected operating grants for EUPHA and other civil society organizations have not been released, nor has clarity been provided by the European Commission. This unforeseen delay has prevented alternative funding arrangements, putting critical EU health priorities—cancer, mental health, health preparedness, and equity—in jeopardy. Many organizations now face severe downsizing or closure, undermining credibility and stability of EU partnerships.

We urgently call on EUPHA members to support our petition urging the European Commission to adopt the 2025 EU4Health Work Plan immediately and secure funding for civil society organizations. Your involvement is crucial:

  1. Sign the petition to safeguard public health in Europe.
  2. Share it with colleagues, students, and your networks.
  3. Read and circulate our letter to Ursula von der Leyen.

Let’s act now to protect public health progress in Europe. Thank you for your crucial support!

Best wishes,

Angelo, Georgios, Hynek
