1. Editorial
Welcome to our first newsletter of the year. In this newsletter you can read that we are welcoming some new members (or in new role) to the ‘EUPHA family’, as well as updates from the European Commission, WHO Regional Office for Europe, and interesting publications in Eurosurveillance and the European Journal of Public Health, and more.

2. EUPHA update
New chair of the EUPHA Section Council: Alastair Leyland
At the EUPHA Section Council 14 and 15 January 2020 a new chair was elected: Alastair Leyland. Congratulations, Alastair! We are very delighted to have you chairing the Section Council.
Introducing EUPHA’s policy liaison officer
The EUPHA office welcomes Tugce Schmitt, EUPHA’s policy liaison officer. Tugce is based at the EUPHA satellite office in Brussels. As policy liaison officer in Brussels, Tugce supports EUPHA in its presence in the European institutions and advocates for evidence-informed health policy making.
EUPHAnxt departing team members and one new member
We are saying farewell to two lovely EUPHAnxt team members. Anton Hasselgren (EUPHAnxt partnerships manager) and Keitly Mensah (EUPHAnxt conference manager) – thank you for all your hard work and energy you put into the network.
And welcome to Monica Brinzac, the new EUPHAnxt conference manager!
EUPHA Health Workforce Research Section Mid-term Conference – abstract submission is open
EUPHA HWR section is delighted to announce its first midterm conference ‘How to make a future health workforce happen? Policy, practice and people’, which will be held in Cluj Napoca, Romania, 18-19 June 2020, in collaboration with partners and the Department of Public Health – Babeș-Bolyai University.
Abstract submission is open! Instructions for submission can be found on the website. Abstract submisison is open until 29 February 2020.

Wake-up call: 10 years remaining to address inequalities on right to health for all
The millennium development goals sought to create a global movement to achieve targets in key areas of health and development. The problem is, we failed to reach most of them. Among those missed were important health related targets: reductions in undernutrition, mortality in children under 5, maternal mortality, and incidence of HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis as well as improvements in reproductive health. The Steering Group on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management of Non-Communicable Diseases holds its Formal Meeting
The Steering Group on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management of Non-Communicable Diseases (SGPP) held its formal meeting 23 January in Brussels. The meeting was an opportunity for the representatives of Member States, the European Investment Bank and several European Commission services to discuss a wide range of public health policies and initiatives. The following day the Steering Group held a joint meeting with the Horizon 2020 Programme Committee SC1 (Health) and the flash report of this meeting is available here.
