The 2024 European Public Health Week (EUPHW), which will take place from May 13-17, 2024, will focus on the important notion that public health is a political choice. Registration for individual events throughout the week can be found . The EUPHW daily themes and kick-off events include:
Monday, May 13th // Health is a political choice!
- Starting the discussion,10:00-11:30 CET (online). During this webinar organised by EUPHA in collaboration with EUPHA’s Public Health Policy and Politics Section, the importance of our weekly theme will be highlighted. We will set the scene for upcoming events throughout the week and launch a call to action.
- Radical community management training,12:00-15:00 CET (in-person, in Brussels). Organised by EUPHA and partners.

A hybrid event organised and supported by EUPHA, the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, the WHO Regional Office for Europe, the European Commission’s DG SANTE and OECD. On the first day of European Public Health Week, this high-level panel discussion will explore the intersection of health and politics. Our panellists will discuss What? – So what? – Now what? with a special focus on the political determinants of health and innovation.
Tuesday, May 14th // Mental health
- How do you do co-creation in mental health? 10:00-11:00 CET (online). People with lived experience of mental health issues have had limited opportunities to participate and contribute to the development of policies and services that meet their needs. Promoting co-creation as the standard practice holds significant benefits. For people with lived experience, co-creation reduces stigma and discrimination related to mental health. It also fosters self-efficacy and self-esteem, while enhancing mental health literacy, Importantly, co-creation ensures that real needs are thoroughly considered and taken into account. But how is it done? How can you contribute? The WHO Regional Office for Europe, Mental Health Europe and EUPHA Sections are hosting a webinar exploring this question.
Wednesday, May 15th // Planetary health
- The strength of partnerships in designing health-promoting policies,10:00-11:00 CEST (online). Health is not merely a personal endeavour; it’s a political choice that shapes the well-being of entire societies. The WHO Regions for Health Network (RHN) recognizes this, emphasizing that political decisions, from resource allocation to policy-making, profoundly impact public health outcomes. How do RHN members and partners identify priorities for action? How can a variety of actors (local and regional authorities, universities and research centres) come together to support cross-sectoral action? How can policymakers be supported towards creating environments that prioritize the well-being of all, ensuring a healthier and more prosperous future for everyone?
Thursday, May 16th // Health through the life course
- Breaking down silos, 10:00-11:00 CEST (online). This webinar is co-organised by the UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education, the EUPHA Health Promotion Section, EUPHA Health Literacy Initiative and the EUPHA’s Health Ageing Section. Universal access to good and affordable health care is a major aspect that contributes to healthy individuals and societies. In addition, we are exposed to many (amenable) factors that impact our health – positively and negatively – along our life course. From the first crucial two years in healthy development to potential decline in functioning and health at a later age – there are many opportunities to prevent negative health outcomes and encourage positive health. How can we encourage innovative and sustainable solutions for our health systems? How can politics drive equity in access to care and health promotion that leaves no one behind? How can we channel a ‘continuum lifespan’ approach?
Friday, May 17th // Next generation of public health
- Public health of today and tomorrow, 14:00-17:30 CEST (hybrid, in Brussels and streamed online). This day will put the next generation of public health leaders in focus. New perspectives are essential to create ground-breaking innovations and challenge the status quo. While we frequently discuss the importance of young voices, it’s time to reflect on our tangible actions. Amplifying these voices means more than just acknowledging their value; it involves actively relinquishing control, sharing the stage, speaking less, and handing over the microphone. We are proud to be the daily partner on Friday, where we will put the next generation of public health leaders in focus, as new perspectives are essential to create ground-breaking innovations and challenge the status quo. How can we better engage our grassroots public health community? Can we create pathways to give more power to students and early professionals? We will be joining forces with other organisations for this event and you can participate both in-person (Brussels, Belgium) and via online streaming. The day will shine a spotlight on the emerging leaders in public health. It’s not merely about acknowledging the importance of young voices; it’s about actively fostering an environment where they can thrive. Sub-themes for Friday include:
-
- Involvement of the next generation in policy-making and politics
- Collaboration of public and private sectors for a healthier tomorrow
- Engagement of civil society
- Innovation in how we collaborate
- Radical community management
- Let’s Shape the Future Together
