1. 2023 EPH Conference in Dublin
Earlier this year, the EUPHA section on Sexual & Gender Minority Health has submitted several workshop proposals on LGBTQI+ health for the EPH Conference in Dublin (November 2023). We are happy to announce that 2 EUPHA-SGMH workshops and 2 roundtables were accepted and will be part of this year’s program. Together with other individual abstracts on SGM health all throughout the program, LGBTQI+ health will be widely discussed. EUPHA-SGMH will share an overview of all presentations on LGBTQI+ health at Dublin 2023 at a later time.
2. New Communication Toolkit to Advance Transgender Rights
Transgender Europe (tgeu.org) recently published a new toolkit to help facilitate effective communication to build support for trans rights. It is aimed at communicating to moveable middle audiences. It can be used for traditional communications or adapted to advocacy, campaigns, and direct conversations. This toolkit was developed to identify communication frames, messages, and strategies from existing research to help trans activists build empathy and support for trans people and trans rights. It gives suggestions on messaging and communication frames that could be developed, and recommendations on next steps. To read more and request a copy, follow this link.
3. Postdoctoral Research Scholar Opportunity
Drs. Van der Star, Blashill, and Wells at San Diego State University are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in LGBTQ+ (mental) health, with expertise in epidemiology, clinical or social psychology, and/or clinical trial management. This position will be primarily involved in two NIH-funded research projects: 1) an epidemiological data harmonization study on the socioecology of sexual minority stigma and mental health and 2) an intervention study focusing on suicide prevention among sexual and gender minority youth. This is a two-year position, with opportunities for extension pending availability of funding. Start date is summer 2023. The Postdoctoral Scholar will interact with multidisciplinary research labs focused on LGBTQ+ health, clinical psychology, health behavior, social and psychiatric epidemiology, and intervention development. In addition to the role on the two projects (i.e., time split equally across the projects), the Scholar will have the opportunity to pursue independent data analysis/manuscripts on multiple existing datasets focused on patient navigation, suicide risk, and sexual orientation/gender identity health disparities, more broadly. The Scholar will also have opportunities for mentorship in career development, research methodology, teaching, and grant writing.
