Dear members of the EUPHA Health promotion section,
Much is going on within the Health Promotion Section. Together with the steering committee we have adopted a new, yet simple, strategy to improve our capacity to better serve our members and make significant contributions to the strengthening of health promotion practice, policy, and research. The strategy includes allowing section members to have ownership in the section and lead in activities and topics by, for example, creating working groups or taking on leadership roles in tasks. As a first step on this path, we launched the working group on Rural Health Promotion. Geir Arild Espnes, Director of NTNU Centre for Health Promotion Research (Norway), is chairing this group dedicated to the rural world. In line with the parti pris of this section, our focus is on actions related to the social determinants of health and equity. We are more interested in what can promote health than what can prevent disease. A first highlight of this working group is our upcoming webinar (On February 26, see announcement below). We do hope you will join us.
Other working groups will be launched in the coming weeks. For 2025, we will focus on some core topics that were identified by the participants of the Join the Network session held in November in Lisbon, e.g., establishing the effectiveness of health promotion, focusing on specific settings and current challenges like rural health, etc. Each topic will be addressed by a specifically dedicated working group led by one of our steering committee members. We will send out invitations to contribute and are looking forward to hearing from those of you who want to collaborate in the working groups. We hope that our working groups will then carry out a number of activities (e.g. writing of short reports, preparation of a webinar, etc.). This strategy will allow for better engagement of our section members and improve visibility and legitimacy of the health promotion domain. So, please stay tuned for our next newsletters where we will publish calls to join these working groups!
Last, the countdown has started for the preparation of the scientific programme for the next European Public Health conference. The call for abstracts is out and there is no doubt that Helsinki will be the place to be for the public health community of Europe. It is certain that the year 2025 is likely to bring many challenges and it is, therefore, more critical than ever that we public health practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and community health workers unite to face them.
Thank you for reading us.

Join us for our next webinar on Rural Health Promotion, February 26, 10.00 – 11.00 CET
In recent years, it has become increasingly evident that rural Europe faces unique public health challenges compared to urban areas. Rural health promotion refers to a branch of public health that focuses on the unique health needs and challenges, but also positive impacts faced by populations living in rural areas. It involves the development, implementation, and evaluation of health programs and policies tailored to address the specific characteristics of rural communities, including geographic, social, economic, and cultural factors.
Join us for a conversation on health promotion policy, programme, and research of rural settings in Europe. This webinar is hosted by Professor Geir Arild Espnes, Director of NTNU Centre for Health Promotion Research and leader of the EUPHA Health Promotion Section working group on rural health promotion. He, with other colleagues, will provide an overview of the field and present the working group. The webinar will be very interactive and participants interested in joining this working group are invited to make themselves known. now and be part of the conversation.

IUHPE 2025 Abu Dhabi
In 2025, the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) will celebrate its 25th World Conference—a momentous occasion marking our 74th year. For the first time, this prestigious event will be hosted in Abu Dhabi, UAE (first time in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region), a gateway between the Mediterranean and the Sahel, from the Atlantic to the Arabian Sea. It is the ideal stage for global health leaders to gather, share knowledge, and shape the future of health promotion.
The location will also make it easier for participants from developing countries to get entry visas when Europe and many other Western countries are making cross border travel more and more difficult. More info on the conference website .
