EUPHA has again had an active month, co-organising the very successful 1st World congress on Migration, ethnicity, race and health in Edinburgh, publishing statements on Migration and health and the EU budget proposal and joining (together with many of our members) the World Federation of public health associations Call for action on AMR.

World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) calls for integrated action on AMR – Join our call Now!
“We call on all governments, the private sector, NGOs, health professionals, public and private research organizations, and all stakeholders to ensure that public health remains at the centre of all policy and scientific endeavours in the field of antimicrobial resistance. We call on all actors to apply an approach set out in the Global Charter for the Public’s Health.”

EUPHA Statement on migration, ethnicity and health
The EUPHA statement on migration, ethnicity and health is published concurrently with the 1st World Congress on Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Health that is held this week, 17-19 May 2018, in Edinburgh.
EUPHA Statement on proposal for the next EU budget 2021-2027
On May 2nd, 2018, Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, presented the proposal for the post-2020 European Union (EU) budget. We believe that European funding for (public) health remains as important as ever and are convinced that it has significant added value. Reflecting on the published proposal, we are pleased to see that the Health Programme will at least be partially continued, even if we are disappointed that the word ‘health’ is almost absent throughout the budget proposal. HTA meeting with Commissioner Andriukaitis
On May 3rd, 2018, Dineke Zeegers Paget, Executive Director of EUPHA, and Elena Petelos, steering committee member of the EUPHA HTA section, attended the roundtable meeting with Commissioner Andriukaitis. EUPHA was invited to present the key points relevant our association particularly on two main areas of the HTA proposal, namely the production of joint clinical assessments and the governance, including the involvement of stakeholders.
European Health Policy Group meeting Rotterdam, Netherlands
On 19-20 April, the European Health Policy Group held their meeting in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The European Health Policy Group exists to help inform and support health policy. Established over 20 years ago, the group meets twice a year. The aim of the group is to help further research and collaboration across Europe to help ensure improvements in health and health care for citizens.
Walter Ricciardi is president-elect of the WFPHA
Walter Ricciardi is president-elect of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA). In addition, he has been awarded the Italian Grand Prix of Advertisement for the best communication for health and social affairs. This is the first time that this price has been given to a Public Health institution.

3rd HLCA Summer School on Health Literacy: “Research on health literacy, in particular children`s health literacy”
The Summer School will take place from September 17th – 21th 2018 at Bielefeld University’s Center for Prevention and Intervention in Childhood and Adolescence (CPI).
The Summer School is free and invites students and researchers from e.g. public health, health communication, education, sociology, psychology, etc., as well as PhD candidates working on related research questions. Participants will be awarded with 3–6 ECTS points.
The Summer School addresses various topics around health literacy research and practice, including unique perspectives from childhood studies. For detailed information, please see the flyer and visit the homepage.
EUPHA section council – Luis Saboga Nunes as vice-chair
We are delighted to announce that the EUPHA Section Council, chaired by Iveta Nagyova, will be supported by recently appointed vice-chair, Luis Saboga Nunes.
The EUPHA Section Council represents the interests and common concerns of all sections; facilitates relations between the sections and other relevant bodies of the association; makes recommendations to the annual conference programme; and coordinates and develops EUPHA statements.

3. European Public Health Conference
Scientific programme
The International Scientific Committee, consisting of 81 public health experts from 23 countries, has finished its job of scoring all the submitted abstracts (1363) and workshops (107). Single abstracts were scored by an average of 4.51 scorers. The average score was 4.25 (last year 4.31). The highest score was 6.400, the lowest 1.500. Workshops were scored by an average of 6.96 scorers. The average score was 4.945. The highest score was 6.429, the lowest 2.143.
The Executive Board of the EPH Conference will now base the decision on acceptance and rejection on the scoring. Results for your abstract/workshop will be available online as of 15 June 2018. Please login to your account in the EPH Conference database to view your results.

SFSP: 3rd seminar on inequalities in health in France
The French Society of Public Health is organising its 3rd seminar on health inequalities on 8 November 2018. This seminar – in French – will be organised in Paris. For more information:
4th International Congress of the Polish Society of Public Health
The 4th International Congress of the Polish Society of Public Health will be held this year in Wrocław, Poland, 22-23 November 2018.

FPH campaigns: Brexit: ‘Do no harm to the public’s health’
The campaigning of the Faculty of Public Health, UK, to ensure Brexit will ‘do no harm’ to the public’s health, was successful! The Government has today (16 May) confirmed that the ‘Do No Harm’ public health duty will remain after the UK leaves the European Union.

Declaration for Patient Safety
Health First Europe launched at the European Parliament the Declaration for Patient Safety which calls the Ministers of Health of the EU to agree on a high level of understanding on patient safety practices and standards to drive their national policies into a common path.

European Commission Conference on “Best practices in implementing the International Health Regulations”
On 7 and 8 June, the Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (HCDCP) and the Greek Ministry of Health in collaboration with the European Commission and the Consumers, Health, Agriculture and Food Executive Agency are organising a two-day conference on “Best Practices in implementing the International Health Regulations”.

DG DEVCO (EU Commission’s Directorate General for Development and Cooperation) has launched an online learning platform open to the entire international development community. More than 80 interactive e-learning courses and 30 other learning materials, including videos, webinars, and documentation, are currently hosted on the platform.
European Semester: Commission proposes health recommendations to 12 EU countries
The Commission has adopted proposals for country specific recommendations, including on health as part of its ongoing assistance to Member States in implementing their health systems reforms in the light of an ageing population and a number of other challenges.

Health systems respond to noncommunicable diseases – high-level regional meeting
On 16–18 April 2018, high-level representatives of the 53 Member States in the WHO European Region, relevant international organizations and selected nongovernmental organizations met in Sitges (Barcelona), Spain, for an in-depth look at good practice in strengthening health systems and scaling up noncommunicable diseases interventions.
WHO urges action on Europe’s biggest killers to reduce early deaths by a third
How can health systems in the WHO European Region save more people from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and help meet the global goal to reduce premature deaths from NCDs by 33% by 2030? Ministers of health and senior policy-makers gathered in Sitges, on 16–18 April 2018, to address this question at the High-Level Regional Meeting: Health Systems Respond to NCDs.
Learning from the Armenian experience
A study tour focussing on organizing health systems for people-centred prevention and care of TB, and on financial reforms to TB services was organized in Armenia for representatives from the ministries of health and finance, and the health insurance funds from Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and the Republic of Moldova.
Financial hardship linked to inadequate health coverage policies
A new analysis from WHO/Europe, released alongside a global UHC monitoring report, compares financial protection in Czechia, Estonia and Latvia. It concludes that households in these broadly similar countries experience markedly different levels of financial hardship when using health services. |
