1. Editorial

To celebrate healthy populations and raise awareness of public health, EUPHA is launching the first-ever European Public Health WEEK, which will be held 13 – 17 May 2019. Read how you can join the WEEK in this newsletter. 

Earlier this month the EUPHA section council came together and had a productive two-day meeting, including prepartions for the European Public Health Conference. Two proposed sections were presented: Digital health and Oral health.

2. EUPHA update

EUPHA publishes e-collection on antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will remain one of the key threats to global health in the years and decades to come. It is already costing thousands of lives every year. The European region is not spared and unless AMR is tackled rapidly, it will likely become one of the top causes of deaths, globally and in Europe. The European Journal of Public Health papers in this e-collection provide concrete examples of how the strategic objectives of the AMR global action plan can be operationalised in the region, showcasing some successes but also highlighting some of the challenges, in particular around changing prescribing and consumption behaviour. 

4th V4 Public Health Conference

European symposium 2019 – Salutogenic hospital design and urban health

EUPHA is proud to be a partner in the 2019 European symposium on salutogenic hospital design and urban health, organised by the Politecnico Milan. This symposium linking architectur and design to health is organised in Milan, Italy from 28-31 March 2019. The president of our EUPHA section on Urban public health, Prof Stefano Capolongo, is the scientific director of the conference.

2nd International Public Mental Health Conference, of the EUPHA Section Public Mental Health, will be held in Jerusalem, Israel on June 19-21, 2019

We cordially invite you to participate and contribute to this exciting conference in Jerusalem. We invite oral and poster abstract submissions that provide scientific knowledge fitting one of the conference tracks. 3. Join the European Public Health WEEK

To celebrate healthy populations and raise awareness of public health, EUPHA is launching the first-ever European Public Health WEEK (EUPHW) between 13 and 17 May 2019, with each day focusing on a specific theme:

• Monday 13 May – Becoming, being and remaining physically active
• Tuesday 14 May – Healthy environments
• Wednesday 15 May – Care 4 care
• Thursday 16 May – Sustainable and healthy diets
• Friday 17 May – Youth mental health

EUPHA encourages organisations, professionals and citizens interested in public health to join activities related to these themes, organise their own or simply spread the word.  

You can find more information on the EUPHA website, which will be updated regularly in the coming months. A form to submit your activities will be available shortly. In the meantime, if you would like to share your ideas and questions please email [email protected].

Abstracts are invited for workshops, oral presentations, pitch presentations and e-posters. Prizes will be awarded for the best oral, poster and early career professional’s presentation. Abstracts do not have to be confined to the conference theme but can cover any aspect of public health.

Digital Public Health
This year’s EPH Conference in Marseille will feature a full track on Digital Health which will be developed in collaboration with the International Digital Public Health (DPH) Conference series. The Digital Health Conferences are world leading annual interdisciplinary events aiming to improve public health through the application of novel technology at the personal, community and global levels. They are unique in bringing together audiences from public health, computer and data science, MedTech industry and NGOs.
 
For those with work of a technical focus (e.g. computer science, data science, big data systems and analysis, development of technology), we recommend submitting your paper/abstract to the DPH system. Deadline for submissions is 25 May 2019.
 
For those with a public health, medical, practice-based focus (e.g. healthcare systems, training, policy), we advise submitting your abstract to the EPH Conference system, to the dedicated ‘Digital Health’ Track. Deadline for submissions is 1 May 2019.
 
Abstract Mentor Programme
The Abstract Mentor Programme offers an opportunity for young and/or less experienced abstract submitters to receive feedback from experienced reviewers on their abstracts.

Registration for the 12th EPH Conference opens 1 April 2019. You can benefit from early bird registration fees until 15 September. We are expecting over 1,500 delegates. Meet your colleagues at the largest public health event in Europe and register early to benefit from the reduced rates.

5. EUPHA members update

EUPHA and the Romanian Association for Public Health publish e-collection on AMR

SFSP supports Walter Ricciardi

The French Society of Public Health is offering its support to Prof. Walter Ricciardi, past president of EUPHA, who stepped down as head of the National Institute of Public Health in Italy last December. Ricciardi protested to the unscientific approach to health by the Italian government. 

DGMS National conference on ‘New ideas for more health’

The German Society for Medical Sociology, together with the DGSMP, is organising its annual conference from 16-18 September in Dusseldorf.

Public Health Switzerland: annual meeting

Public Health Schweiz is organising a symposium on ‘balanced diets, served in a comprehensive way’ on 12 March 2019 in Bern.

Wanted: Public Health Experts in CUAMM

Doctors with Africa-CUAMM is an international NGO working for health system strengthening in Africa. Their mission is to advocate the universal right to health and promote the values of international solidarity, justice and peace. Working in 8 sub-Saharan African countries (Angola, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Central African Republic and Uganda). And the main intervention areas are: maternal and child health, nutrition, infectious diseases and no communicable diseases.
Public Health Experts in CUAMM work at the district level to improve the management and the quality of services. They ensure technical assistance to local health authorities, carry out supervision and training at the peripheral level, strengthen the information system, collaborate to data collection and analysis and promote the dialogue with the community.

Invitation Short Course Methods in Social Epidemiology: 15 – 17 May 2019 at the University of Antwerp

What to expect?
In this short course on methods in social epidemiology, experts will treat several topics of this rapidly evolving discipline. Besides the key note presentations in the morning, the methods sections in the afternoon will make you acquainted with the practical aspects. This course is really a must for all scholars working in public health and epidemiological research.

The course will be organised on the City Campus of the University of Antwerp. This campus is easily accessible by public transport.

Students or researchers in the field of epidemiology, public health, health promotion and education, health care management, biomedical or social sciences.

When research participation pays, some people lie

Offering compensation can be an important tactic to attract potential participants for enrollment in research studies, but it might come at a cost. A new study found that up to 23 percent of respondents lied about their eligibility to participate in a survey when offered payment, even small amounts.

Digital Health – First EU Patients That Can Use e-Prescriptions in Another Country

Finnish patients are now able to go to a pharmacy in Estonia and retrieve medicine prescribed electronically by their doctor in Finland. The initiative is part of the eHealth Digital Service Infrastructure in which patients no longer need to provide a written prescription.

First Regional Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance: Cape Town, South Africa, 5-8 February 2019

The Commission organised the first of a series of regional workshops on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The purpose of the training is to provide support on strategies and actions promoting and strengthening the prudent use of antimicrobials and monitoring resistance in veterinary, food safety and public health sectors, to reinforce engagement with international organisations, and intensify cooperation with the invited countries. The workshop aims to help the participants to address AMR in their own countries, thus benefitting the whole region.

The Steering Group on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management of Non-Communicable Diseases held its second formal meeting on 14 February 2019. The Flash Report of the meeting is available here. 
The agenda included discussions on cooperation with the Expert Group on Health Information, progress made in the EU on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Member States’ contributions to the sustainability of Orphanet, the European portal and database for rare diseases, and their uptake of the EU Rare Diseases Registry Platform. The Steering Group also discussed possible new policy actions and exchange views on linking the European Semester to the work of the Group.

WHO symposium on the future of digital health systems

The Symposium, held on 6-8 February 2019, in Copenhagen, Denmark, brought together evidence and experience to show how governments and organizations can adopt digital health to reduce inequalities and improve the health and well-being of populations.

Measles in Europe: record number of both sick and immunized

More children in the WHO European Region are being vaccinated against measles than ever before; but progress has been uneven between and within countries, leaving increasing clusters of susceptible individuals unprotected, and resulting in a record number of people affected by the virus in 2018. In light of measles data for the year 2018 released today, WHO urges European countries to target their interventions to those places and groups where immunization gaps persist. According to monthly country reports for January to December 2018 (received as of 01 February 2019), 82 596 people in 47 of 53 countries contracted measles.  The total number of people infected with the virus in 2018 was the highest this decade: 3 times the total reported in 2017 and 15 times the record low number of people affected in 2016.

Towards a digital health roadmap for the WHO European Region

How can countries in the Region design and invest in digital innovations that strengthen health systems to achieve better health for all? More than 300 decision-makers, policy experts and researchers from 50 countries gathered at the WHO Symposium on the Future of Digital Health Systems on 6–8 February 2019 in Copenhagen, Denmark, to discuss the way forward. The benefits of digital health are clear. It can improve the reach, impact and efficiency of health care. It can help improve the training of the health workforce, strengthen public health surveillance, and provide health services to remote and underserved populations.

Social science training enhances community engagement in health emergencies in 11 countries of the European Region

Under the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) and the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) framework, WHO provides support to Member States to improve national capacity to engage communities through enhanced use of social science-based interventions (SSIs) before, during and after health emergencies. The SocialNET training, a global initiative of WHO, was the first of its kind in the European Region and was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on 10–14 December 2018. It strengthens WHO/Europe’s efforts to build skills in emergency risk communication (ERC) and community engagement as part of the ERC five-step capacity-building package..

Key political commitment documents for tuberculosis prevention and care and their intended influence in the WHO European Region

A review of the potential role and influence of political commitment in implementing endorsements and conducting policy in the field of TB prevention and care. It compares and analyzes the extent to which selected international commitments, set out between 2000 and 2018, may have translated into sustainable action. Developed in view of the United Nations high level meeting on TB held in September 2018.
