Across Europe, urban settlements are changing and expanding. Due to lack of land resources, urban growth and development increasingly relies on the re-use and conversion of land with different former functions (e.g. former agricultural, industrial, commercial, military or harbour land) located both within and around the settlement area.
The WHO European Centre for Environment and Health aims to develop a set of best practices on redevelopment of contaminated sites for urban planners and policymakers. To this end, we are collecting case studies on the environmental and health impacts of urban redevelopment of contaminated sites – including specific HIA/SEA/EIAs in this area.
We are looking for case studies, where
(1) a formerly contaminated (e.g. agricultural, industrial, waste disposal, military, accident-related) site was redeveloped to enable a new urban purpose on or next to it;
(2) the new use of the site after remediation includes any urban functions with public access (housing, schools, entertainment or recreation etc.);
(4) and the project was finished before 2018, so that reliable information on environmental and health impacts can be compiled.
If you feel that a project you were involved in meets the above criteria for a case study, please fill in the details in this template. Please do not hesitate to submit projects with unexpected outcomes. Filling out the case study template takes approximately 45-60 minutes, and contributors will be acknowledged in the case study working paper, as part of the forthcoming WHO project report.
We would greatly appreciate if you further distribute the survey link in your professional networks. Case studies will be collected until the end of May.
For questions on the survey, please contact us per email at euhia@who.int
Thank you in advance for your participation and contribution.
