Call for Papers to a special public health issue (“Healthy Aging: Advancing Public Health Strategies and Interventions”) of journal Geroscience

(Official Journal of the American Aging Association, D1, IF: 5.3)

Associate Editors:
Roza Adany, MD, PhD
Vince Fazekas-Pongor, MD, PhD
Zoltan Ungvari, MD, PhD

This special issue of Geroscience, in collaboration with the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) Healthy Aging Section and the WHO Regional Office for Europe, focuses on advancing strategies and interventions for healthy aging from a public health perspective. The promotion of healthy aging is a critical priority in the context of global demographic shifts and the aging population. From epidemiological analyses and health promotion strategies to urban planning, dietary interventions, and mental health, fostering healthy aging requires a multidisciplinary and public health-oriented approach. We aim to engage the broader public health, epidemiology, and preventive medicine community in exploring innovative strategies and evidence-based solutions to promote healthy aging. We invite researchers to submit manuscripts that address the multifaceted dimensions of healthy aging, with a particular focus on the public health perspective.

Topics of interest include:

Epidemiology of Aging: Population-based studies identifying determinants of healthy aging. Analyses of age-related chronic diseases and their trajectories, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. Development and validation of epidemiological models for aging interventions.

Health Promotion and Interventions: Strategies to encourage healthy lifestyles and behaviors across the lifespan. Workplace health promotion models and their role in aging well. Innovative programs targeting physical activity, mental health, and social engagement.

Nutrition and Diet in Healthy Aging: The role of dietary patterns in promoting healthy aging. Public health campaigns addressing nutrition and aging-related diseases. Nutritional epidemiology and its application to aging populations.

Mental Health and Healthy Aging: Public health strategies addressing mental health challenges in older adults. Approaches to mitigate loneliness and social isolation in aging populations. Interventions to preserve cognitive function and emotional well-being in later life.

Public Health Genomics and Personalized Approaches to Aging: The role of genomics in understanding risk factors and prevention strategies for age-related chronic diseases.

Digital Solutions for Healthy Aging: The role of digital tools and telehealth in improving access to healthcare for older adults. Use of wearable technology and mobile applications in promoting physical activity, cognitive health, and disease management. Big data and AI-driven approaches for monitoring and enhancing healthy aging.

Environment and Healthy Aging: The role of the exposome in shaping aging trajectories, including lifetime exposure to environmental pollutants, toxins, and social stressors. Effects of air pollution, noise, and chemical exposures on cardiovascular, respiratory, and cognitive health in older adults. Interactions between environmental factors and genetic/epigenetic aging mechanisms. Strategies for mitigating the health effects of environmental stressors in aging populations, including policy interventions and urban planning initiatives. The impact of urban design and green spaces on physical and mental health in aging populations. Climate change and its implications for age-related health outcomes. Public health strategies to create supportive environments for aging communities.

Innovative Approaches to Measuring and Promoting Healthy Aging: Development of new biomarkers and indices for assessing healthy aging. The use of digital tools and big data in public health aging research. Interdisciplinary approaches to aging well in diverse populations

Submission Guidelines:

We encourage submissions from public health researchers, epidemiologists, health promotion experts and related fields. Manuscripts may present original research, systematic reviews, or perspectives that contribute to our understanding of public health strategies for healthy aging.

Submissions should be made through the Geroscience submission portal (https://www.editorialmanager.com/jaaa/default.aspx) and must adhere to the journal’s formatting standards. During the submission process, please select the “SI: Healthy Aging” option to indicate your participation in this Call for Papers. The submitted manuscripts will undergo the customary peer-review process and will be published online immediately upon acceptance. Accepted manuscripts will be featured in an exclusive online collection and receive dedicated promotion through our social media channels.
