Dear EUPHA Public Health Policy and Politics (EUPHA PHPP) section members,
As part of European Public Health Week 2026, the EUPHA PHPP Section invites you to join our upcoming webinar:
Democratic Health Governance Amidst Geopolitical Uncertainty under the overarching theme: “Protecting Public Health and Democracy: Tackling Disinformation, Strengthening Accountability, and Building Trust”
Wednesday, 7 May 2026 | 11:00–12:00 CEST | Online | Language: English | Duration: 60 minutes
COVID-19 has put health high on policymaking agendas – nationally and internationally. While this momentum is important, a simple increase in attention to health governance is not enough. We also need to ask: how is health (policy) being governed? Geopolitical uncertainty has also fuelled distrust in multilateral institutions and triggered a turn towards the topics of security and autonomy. Health governance must however protect democratic values and global equity, or it risks losing the trust from populations ultimately resulting in undermining health outcomes.
The webinar will explore these tensions through a keynote by Charlotte Godziewski, Senior Lecturer in International Politics. The keynote is followed by a panel discussion exploring the topic from different angles. We are happy to have three speakers on board:
Stephanie Baker will discuss the topic in the context of infodemics and misinformation.
Holly Jarman will discuss the topic in the context of democratic backsliding and health.
Thibaud Deruelle will discuss how institutions construct trustworthiness.
There will be time for questions and answers from the audience as well.
