Meet the EUPHA-IDC section

In November 2025, Anja Schreijer was elected as president of the EUPHA-IDC section. Dr. Schreijer is doctor of infectious diseases and director of Public Health Research at the Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center (The Netherlands).

Together with her vice-president Maria Gańczak, vice-president Maria Gańczak, professor, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the University of Zielona Gora (Poland), she appointed an international and interdisciplinary steering committee who will help in realising the goals of the IDC section: 

  • Jeanine Guidry-Drost – Assistant professor and behavioral scientist at Department of Communication and Cognition, Tilburg University (The Netherlands)
  • Araya Gautam – Medical doctor, Queen Margaret University (United Kingdom)
  • Ondřej Holý – Associate prof. in Epidemiology and Head of Science and Research Centre, Palacký University Olomouc (Czech Republic)
  • Karolina Airapetian – Public health consultant and guest lecturer at School of Public Health of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Ukraine)
  • Jeannette de Boer – Medical doctor of infectious diseases and head of education, Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center (The Netherlands)
  • Claudia Cosma – Medical doctor and research fellow, University of Florence (Italy)
  • Oliver Wegehaupt – Medical doctor in pediatrics and clinician scientist, Medical Center, University of Freiburg (Germany)

With extensive experience in infectious disease control and public health across national and international institutions, the section will focus on:

  • Multidisciplinary and cross-border cooperation including building bridges with colleagues in the biomedical field as well as the social sciences;
  • Knowledge sharing on innovative and evidence-based approaches;
  • Strengthening the visibility and impact of the IDC section within EUPHA and beyond;
  • Involving young professionals and stimulating leadership within the field.

In the coming year, the IDC section will actively contribute to various EUPHA activities, such as the European Public Health Conference (EPHC2026) in Bilbao and the European Public Health Week (EUPHW2026). The section will also strengthen collaboration within the section by organizing webinars, sending informative newsletters and facilitating (international) collaboration on grants or other funding opportunities.

Dr. Schreijer adds: “In times when Public Health is under pressure, it is important to connect and join forces with colleagues from across Europe (and beyond) to strengthen the quality of prevention, preparedness and response. We are looking forward to working with our section members, the presidents of the other sections, and many more on this task. Let’s strengthen the quality of infectious disease prevention and control together!”

European Public Health Conference 2026: Call for Abstracts

This year, the European Public Health Conference (#EPHC2026) will be held from 10 – 13 November 2026 in Bilbao (Spain). The general theme of the conference is ‘Urban and global synergies: shaping the future of public health with climate resilience, equity and innovation’. 

We would like to invite all members of the EUPHA-IDC section to share your research and insights on the infectious disease-related challenges facing Europe and beyond, and be part of Europe’s leading public health dialogue.

Deadline submissions: 1 May 2026, 18:00 CET

We encourage everyone to use this opportunity to promote and strengthen the quality of infectious disease prevention and control in the European Region, at the local, national and regional levels.

European Public Health Week 2026: let us know if you are planning something!

European Public Health Week (EUPHW) is an annual initiative led by EUPHA to shine a spotlight on public health. Each year, hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals across Europe come together to host activities, share knowledge and raise awareness of important public health challenges and solutions.

This year, EUPHW takes place from 4-8 May 2026. This year’s overarching theme, “Investing for sustainable health and well-being”, highlights the importance of long-term, strategic investments in people, systems and communities.

We warmly invite members of the EUPHA-IDC section to organise an event – whether it is a webinar, workshop, panel discussion, community dialogue or lecture – and contribute to the conversation.

Maria Gańczak new Deputy Editor of European Journal of Public Health

We are proud to announce that our vice-president Maria Gańczak is the new Deputy Editor of the European Journal of Public Health within the thematic area Disease Control and Prevention. The role of Deputy Editor carries editorial responsibility, including safeguarding scientific quality, ensuring fairness in peer review, and shaping the intellectual direction of the journal. We are very happy with the appointment of Maria, and are certain that her expertise and experience will be a great asset to the Journal.
