Dear colleagues,

It was great to see so many of you at the recent European Public Health Conference (EPH) in Helsinki where I formally took over the presidency of the EUPHA-HSR Section just about one month ago (Nov 12th 2025). Thank you all for your vote of trust. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Johan for his service over the past few years, where I was honoured to serve as his vice-president and learn a lot from him (2019-2025). It was always fun and enriching to work together. I have invited Johan to join me as a member of the Steering Comitte of our HSR-Section and hope for him stay close and active providing strategic advice and support. I now look forward to serve you in my new role as president of the HSR-section and am happy to share that Filippo Quatrone, has kindly accepted to join me in this task in the role of vice-president. If you could not make it to the JNM here is the presentation  Charting the Way Forward for the HSR Section that will guide us during our term as it frames the vision and a starting structure for the plan as well as introduces us as a team. 

Our 3 lines of action for the HSR-Section 2026 

With our first newsletter, we would like to inform you what we have been doing in the first 30+ days, share with you our initial toughts, activities and information and extend our heartful invitation to join us in our vision and work.

In full aligment and support of the EUPHA Strategy (Evidence, Equity, Engaement and Empowerment), we are developing themes and lines of actions for the HSR Section that we would like to share with you.

OUTREACH & ENGAGEMENT

  • HSR-Community Day – yearly
  • HSR-Consultations – on demand
  • HSR-Track during EPH 

LEARNING & SHARING

  • Webinars / Skills building Sessions – regularly also in colaboration with other EUPHA Sections
  • A Mid-Term Meeting / Spring School – a one week full programm (estimated: late may)
  • Sharing ongoing work of community members
  • Disseminating opportunities for collaboration or training

As a member of the EUPHA-HSR Community you bring your view and expertese to make our community vibrant. An unique blend of experienced and dynamic individuals, researchers and professionals with a deep, braod and extensive knowledge on health services, research methodology, public health and practice acumen. We all surly unite in the vision and aim to promote and improve the health and well-being of citizens,  patients while supporting public health practitioners in quality improvement and evidence generation.

Join us  to prepare the 2026 EPH HSR Program!

Would you like to help us develop an interesting HSR-Program for EPH 2026? Join us early in the preparation of topics for a strong and interesting HSR-Track in Bilbao. We aim to have a strong HSR-EUPHA community visibility in Bilbao! Starting in January we will work on our Abstracts and Workshops. Join us early to ensure you got a slot space and we build together an interesting and innovative program for HSR!

Share your work, skills and ideas! 

Share them, lets grow them together and maybe we can have an editorial, article, statement, new research project or just fun in learning from each other!

Past activities: JNM Join the network meeting during the 2025 EPH Conference 

The JNM was lead by Johan Hansen (former section president) who summarized of his time as section president, reflected on his roles and achivements, the pandemic,  the post pandemic and its implications for all of us, concluding with sharing insights on posible advancements for developement of the work. From within the EUPHA-HSR Community a new book was just published. The Authors  by three long standing and highly active members of our HSR Community: “Health Systems, Health Services and Inequality in Population Health. Book by Peter Groenewegen, Ilmo Keskimäki and Alastair Leyland.” Peter Groenewegen presented the new book during the JNM. Just after, the presidency was passed and Lorena Dini, who presented her vision and plan for her term as HSR section president. Johan Hansen and Lorena Dini received wonderfull certificates and healty sweets from the hands of  the hands of the Chair of the Section Council of the EUPHA  Alastair Leyland. Section members had opportunity to enjoy their lunch boxes and at the end network and engagge. We want to thank you to all twenty-two members from fifteen countries (Brazil, Finland, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Germany, Norway, Turkey, Portugal, Romania, Greece and Singapore during their lunch break! We have received wonderful pictures and lovely memories of this day! Thank you for the direct sending and social media postings

Past activities: Collaboration within the EUPHA-Public Health Workforce and Services Network

As the president of the EUPHA HSR Section I was invited to share our work with the working group on social medicine of the German Association of Familiy Doctors (DEGAM, Soziale Gesundheit). For this ocasion I invited the president of the EUPHA-Section Health and Care Workforce, Dr. Marius Ungurenau to join me for the event on December 5th hold online. We had a great exchange with the German collegues. The presentations by Lorena Dini and then Marius were embebbed in peer-exchange. Questions reached from how is where social prescribing working or not, what are the forms of social interaction and support systems, what is the role of the organization, roles and functions, communicaiton chanells with members. We announced the upcoming EPH in Bilbao, the posibility to join the network and becoming members of EUPHA. Posibilities of endorsing position papers and possible collaborations were also on the table. A fruitfull exchange with participation of two EUPHA Sections.

Upcoming Activities

ONE-WEEK ALL-IN: Mid-Term, Spring-School and Community Day

Now it is the time to start preparing the follow up of our THSR-Spring School! In 2026 This time we will host it as a HSR-EUPHA-MID-TERM regional meeting (2 days) followed by 3 days of full immersion hackathon (where the last day will be a open-community day for the local Public Health Professionals of the country where we will be hosted. We aim at the end of this week to have produced at least 3 articles for a special issue on health services research to be published in the EJPH.

Current open calls and HSR funding opportunities

  • The Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems (https://www.thcspartnership.eu/) has launched an EU wide consultation, collecting views on capacity building related to Research and innovation (R&I) for transforming health and care systems, if possible by 26 January 2026 via https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/CapacityBuildingSurvey

    • The Partnership also launched a new call for proposals to fund projects in THCS partner countries focusing on ensuring equitable access to and utilisation of health and care services (with a deadline for pre-proposals of 2 February 2026, see JTC 2026 – Access to Care).

  • 2026 Workplan of the Horizon Europe Cluster Health Programme – The draft programm is available at the EC Comitology Register. See also here for the draft programme of the various Missions, including the Mission on Cancer.
  • The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) Partnership has announced its new call for proposals, to be launched in early 2026, see Future opportunities | IHI
