    • Resource allocation and system sustainability
    • Ageing and long-term care
    • Cost-of-illness studies
    • Health inequalities and social determinants

  • Two project showcases and discussions of working papers promoted collaborative feedback and future research directions. Posters were on display throughout, contributing further insights and stimulating informal exchanges.

News on European health systems and policies

#1 – Denmark’s new cancer plan places prevention at its core.
Denmark has launched an ambitious new national cancer strategy with a strong focus on prevention and early detection. The plan includes increased tobacco taxation, expanded HPV vaccination coverage, tighter alcohol regulations, and broader screening programs. With cancer cases expected to rise by 50% by 2040, Denmark aims to reduce incidence through lifestyle interventions and environmental regulation, setting a European example of upstream, population-level cancer control.

#2 – The EU intensifies action on climate risks through a new resilience strategy.
In response to mounting evidence from the European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA), the European Commission unveiled a strategy to better manage and anticipate climate risks. The plan outlines urgent adaptation needs across sectors—health, water, food, ecosystems, and infrastructure—and highlights that Europe is heating twice as fast as the global average. Potential GDP losses could reach €2.4 trillion by 2050. The strategy includes new governance mechanisms, improved tools and early warning systems, and a focus on resilient planning and finance to protect citizens and the economy.

#3 – Citizens call for a fairer EU budget and stronger public investment.
The European Citizens’ Panel on the EU Budget has issued its final recommendations, calling for greater transparency, simplicity, and alignment with citizens’ priorities. Key proposals include boosting funding for health, environment, and education; better fiscal fairness; and a rethinking of national contributions and EU tax sources. The panel’s voice feeds into upcoming decisions on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), with an emphasis on participatory budgeting and strategic investment in well-being and resilience.
