Investing in the health of girls and women: a best buy for sustainable development

The BMJ | Analysis | Health, Wealth and Profits
Human rights, theory, evidence, and common sense all suggest that greater investment in women’s health could be among the “best buys” for broader economic development and societal wellbeing, say Michelle Remme and colleagues

"Investments in health are known to generate large social and economic benefits, in addition to saving lives and improving quality of life. Yet given the 2030 global development agenda and its broad set of priorities, resources need to be targeted to interventions with the greatest impacts. The disproportionate impact on economic development of investments in women’s education and economic participation is well known, but it is less well understood that programmes that improve women’s health could have substantial and disproportionately higher economic and social returns, compared with other uses of social resources."
