Welcome to the May newsletter of EUPHA.
The European Public Health Week (11-15 May) was a great success with 147 events in 31 countries. We are grateful for all partners and participants that joined forces for healthier populations. Other news includes the EU4Health programme that is proposed by the European Commission as a new, ambitious stand-alone health programme for the 2021-2027 period, COVID-19 updates, and the publication of a new supplement to the European Journal of Public Health on the health-related Sustainable Development Goals.

Announcement: EUPHA presents COVID-19 video reports – COVID-19 through a public health lens
As COVID-19 continues to cause widespread fatalities and disruption around the world, EUPHA is producing video reports shining light on the vital work of Europe’s public health community, and the sector’s role in maintaining and improving public health through the pandemic and into the future. The video reports will feature a series of films exploring the outbreak’s broad impact on health and the economy in Europe. It will look at the immense pressure on health systems and their response to this unprecedented challenge, highlight the importance of evidence-based approaches and health literacy in providing much needed solutions, and address key lessons to support the development of prevention and response strategies for future pandemics. The video reports will be available to view on our COVID-19 updates page and on our social channels (expected early June).

EU action on health is more urgent than ever, says EU4Health coalition
The Coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated and exposed the vulnerability of our healthcare systems, our societies and our health. Severe care disruptions, medicines shortages and unequal access to healthcare are but a few examples of the challenges affecting millions of people living in Europe.

4. European Public Health Conference
16th World Congress on Public Health goes virtual from 12-16 October 2020
Since we announced last month that the 16th World Congress on Public Health (WCPH) will be held as an entirely virtual and online congress from 12 – 16 October we have worked hard on revising the programme of plenary and parallel sessions, networking opportunities and exhibition areas.

5. EUPHA members update
Croatian Public Health Association presenting at EU presidency event
To support the Croatian EU Presidency on the theme of healthy ageing, EUPHA and the Croatian Public Health Association (HDJZ) published an e-collection. This e-collection presents the evidence-base on health and ageing, listing scientific peer-reviewed papers on healthy ageing that are published in the European Journal of Public Health in the past three years. The e-collection is accompanied by an editorial describing the policy links and summarising the evidence. During the BFHA 2020 Conference, the e-collection will be presented by Danijela Štimac Grbić (HDJZ) and Tugce Schmitt (EUPHA). The presentation will be on the third day of the Conference, 5 June 2020, in Session 1C.

Obesity not related to how close you live to fast food or gyms
A new study from Lund University in Sweden has shown no correlation between obesity and how close you live to fast food restaurants or gyms. Studies from other countries have previously indicated that these factors may be important in adult obesity. Read the original research paper
OSH Barometer: interactive tool to discover the status of OSH in Europe
The OSH Barometer is the first data visualisation tool with up-to-date information on the status of and trends in occupational safety and health (OSH) in European countries.The tool consists of four groups of indicators on a range of OSH topics, such as OSH authorities, national strategies, working conditions and OSH statistics. You can visualise and compare data, generate graphics and download reports on specific topics.
Testing for drug-related infectious diseases – a crucial step towards meeting international health goals
“Testing for drug-related infectious diseases among people who inject drugs (PWID) is crucial if international health targets are to be met.” This is among the conclusions of a new EMCDDA report: Drug-related infectious diseases in Europe. The update, from the agency’s drug-related infectious disease network, stresses that early diagnosis through testing, and improving links to treatment and care, are crucial steps towards reaching global health goals.

Europe’s moment: Repair and prepare for the next generation
On 27 May 2020, the European Commission has put forward its proposal for a major recovery plan. To ensure the recovery is sustainable, even, inclusive and fair for all Member States, the European Commission is proposing to create a new recovery instrument, Next Generation EU, embedded within a powerful, modern and revamped long-term EU budget. The Commission has also unveiled its adjusted Work Programme for 2020, which will prioritise the actions needed to propel Europe’s recovery and resilience.

Reinforcing Europe’s resilience: halting biodiversity loss and building a healthy and sustainable food system
On 20 May 2020, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive new Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives and a Fram to Fork Strategy for a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system. The two strategies are mutually reinforcing, bringing together nature, farmers, business and consumers for jointly working towards a competitively sustainable future.

European Semester: All Member States should strengthen resilience of their health systems
On 19 May 2020, the Commission adopted proposals for country-specific recommendations that require each Member State to take steps to strengthen the resilience of its national health system. It is the first time, in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, that the Commission has proposed health recommendations to all Member States.

Coronavirus Global Response
On 4 May 2020, the Commission registered €7.4 billion in pledges from donors worldwide during the Coronavirus Global Response pledging event. This includes a pledge of €1.4 billion by the Commission. This almost reaches the initial target of €7.5 billion and is a solid starting point for the worldwide pledging marathon, which began with the pledging conference. The aim is to gather significant funding to ensure the collaborative development and universal deployment of diagnostics, treatments and vaccines against coronavirus.

Coronavirus: Commission boosts urgently needed research and innovation with additional €122 million
The Commission has mobilised another €122 million from its research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020, for urgently needed research into the coronavirus. The new call for expressions of interest contributes to the Commission’s €1.4 billion pledge to the Coronavirus Global Response initiative, launched by President Ursula von der Leyen on 4 May 2020.

Survey on socially and medically vulnerable populations in the EU/EEA and the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic
This survey is being conducted across the EU/EEA and the UK as part of ECDC’s efforts to identify good practices aimed at addressing the challenges faced by people living in vulnerable situations during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of the survey – including the good practices identified and the lessons learned – will be synthesised and included in guidance documents to be published by ECDC. The deadline for responses to the survey is 16.00 CET on Monday June 1.
