Early-onset cancers, i.e., diagnosed before the age of 50, are increasing globally, raising major concerns among the public and health authorities. There is, however, confusion between trends in the absolute numbers and in the age-standardized rates. Comparisons with later-onset cancers are also often missing, making it difficult to assess whether the changes observed are specific to younger adults. In this presentation, we will discuss the results of our population-based studies on early- and later-onset cancer incidence and mortality trends in Switzerland. We will also discuss the respective contributions of demographic shifts and changes in risk, and what these results mean for public health.”
