This initiative, coordinated by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) Department of Nursing, aims to promote the mental health and emotional well-being of midwifery students through the development of a structured expression and peer-support group. Supporting the mental well-being of midwifery students is essential for strengthening a resilient, compassionate, and effective health workforce, aligning with the European Public Health Week (EUPHW) theme of supporting the health and social care workforce.
In the Cyprus context—where caesarean section rates are among the highest in Europe and breastfeeding rates among the lowest—evidence from a series of research and innovation projects (Baby Buddy, RESPECT, MindTheMum) points to sub-optimal practices not fully aligned with Respectful Maternity Care. These gaps impact not only women’s care experiences, health, and well-being, but also the well-being of perinatal healthcare providers, including the next generation of midwives .Recognizing the psychological and moral challenges that arise during clinical placements and academic training, the program provides a safe, supportive, and reflective space where students can openly share experiences, process emotional challenges, and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Objectives:
The primary objectives are to (a) support students in managing psycho-emotional stressors, (b) enhance resilience and self-awareness, (c) encourage peer connection, mutual respect, and empowerment, and (d) gradually enable participants to transition into a sustainable, student-led self-help group.
Content:
The group focuses on discussing emotionally and morally challenging situations encountered during clinical practice, as well as stressors related to the academic program. Sessions incorporate guided reflection, sharing of personal experiences, and the development of coping strategies, including emotional regulation, active listening, and constructive peer feedback. The approach aims to reduce stress and feelings of isolation often associated with demanding clinical training, while strengthening emotional well-being.
Format:
The initiative involves a small group of students of the MSc Midwifery programme and is facilitated by academic staff with expertise in mental health care. It follows a blended format, combining in-person and online sessions via Zoom, ensuring accessibility and continuity. The first in-person meeting will be initiated on the day of the event to mark EUPHW, and will be followed by additional in-person and online sessions. This structure fosters trust, group cohesion, and active participation. Over time, the group is expected to evolve into a peer-led support network, contributing to a supportive learning environment and promoting sustainable well-being practices among future midwives.
The Cyprus Epidemiology and Public Health Association (CyEPHA) supports this initiative as part of its efforts to promote knowledge exchange and public health action, and will contribute to the dissemination of the initiative and its outcomes.
