Within the European Public Health Week (EUPHW) 2026, the Museum of the History of Medicine and the Faculty of Public Health at the Medical University of Varna, host a thematic exhibition dedicated to the evolution and societal role of the nursing profession.
The exhibition, part of the museum’s permanent collection, will be specially curated for EUPHW to highlight the transformation of nursing from an act of compassion and voluntary care into a modern, knowledge-based and highly skilled profession at the core of healthcare systems.
Throughout the week, visitors, students and professionals will have the opportunity to engage with the history, values and contemporary significance of nursing as a key link between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring that care is delivered with both scientific precision and human empathy.
The initiative will culminate on 8 May and will contribute to the celebrations of the International Nurses Day (12 of May), with a short public lecture held in the museum, reflecting on nursing as a “noble art” that unites science, education and humanity.
The event is supported by the Bulgarian Public Health Association and aims to raise awareness of the critical role of nurses in health systems, strengthen professional identity, and promote respect for nursing as a cornerstone of patient-centred care.
