In this newsletter, we will promote upcoming events and opportunities throughout the autumn, including the European Public Health Conference this November in Lisbon, Portugal. We are delighted to share with you the very good news that our very own Monica-Georgiana Brînzac passed her PhD viva voce this past month. Congratulations on your very hard work, Monica! We are proud of you and we look forward for your bright future post-PhD.

For those of you who are new to our network, EUPHAnxt is a unique network within EUPHA for students and young professionals, including early career researchers and policymakers in the field of public health. EUPHAnxt is a free and open initiative that aims to inform and involve future generations in the European and multidisciplinary network of public health associations.

You are encouraged to share related opportunities and events with us and we would be pleased to disseminate it to our network. EUPHAnxt is open to partnering with student organisations in Europe. If you are a part of an organisation that may be interested in joining forces, please contact us. A word from the EUPHAnxt co-ordinator

Dear EUPHAnxt friends and community,

Joining EUPHAnxt has been one of the most rewarding personal and professional choices I’ve ever made. It has allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible people who have helped shape me into a better person. To Jinane and Charlotte, thank you for being part of the OG team and for your tireless dedication. Domitilla and Sophie, thank you for coming on board and completing our team in such a beautiful manner. Laura and Mojdeh, I’m deeply grateful for your contributions as well. I am lucky to have met you and to work with you! Thank you!

EUPHA team is among the most supportive and beautiful teams I know. They have been our biggest supporters since the beginning. Thank you for empowering me even when I did not believe in myself.

EUPHAnxt became our safe haven—a place where we came together after our full-time jobs to work towards advancing public health, empowering the next generation of public health professionals, and building a strong community. I sincerely hope we’ve achieved these goals and made a meaningful impact.

A heartfelt thanks to all our amazing partners for embracing our ideas and joining us on this journey. I’m truly grateful for your companionship in everything we’ve accomplished. To our entire network, thank you for your constant support and for being the driving force behind all our initiatives. I hope I’ve served you well.

Now, it’s time to share some bittersweet news. With immense gratitude, I am stepping down as coordinator. It feels like the right moment to make space for someone new, with fresh ideas and perspectives, to carry this work forward.Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Call for new EUPHAnxt coordinator

We are currently recruiting for a new EUPHAnxt coordinator. The deadline for applying is 8th of November. To apply for this position, please submit your CV, along with a brief strategy you would like to pursue within EUPHAnxt and a plan for managing the EUPHAnxt team to the following e-mail address: info.euphanxt@eupha.org

 

The EUPHAnxt coordinator will not act out of self-interest and self-promotion but rather as an advocator and enabler of students, young, and early career professionals in public health. The age limit got this position is no older than 30 years and the position is for a maximum of three years. Please note that all the work is done on a voluntary basis!

Key Competencies:

  1. Leadership and Coordination

  • Strong organizational skills to manage a diverse network of students, young and early career professionals public health professionals across Europe.

  • Ability to coordinate and oversee activities, including event planning, collaborations, and capacity-building programs.

  1. Communication and Engagement

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage a variety of stakeholders, including students, professionals, policymakers, and the public.

  • Ability to represent EUPHAnxt at national and international conferences, forums, and EUPHA events, acting as an ambassador for young public health professionals.

  1. Strategic Planning and Vision

  • Ability to develop long-term strategies for EUPHAnxt’s growth and alignment with EUPHA’s broader goals.

  • Understanding of current and emerging public health issues, particularly those impacting young public health professionals.

  • Capacity to identify and implement opportunities for partnership and collaboration with other public health organizations and stakeholders.

  1. Public Health Expertise

  • Knowledge of European health systems and public health policy frameworks.

  • Understanding of issues such as health equity, healthcare access, digital health, and sustainable healthcare solutions.

  • Experience working with or studying healthcare challenges across different European regions (e.g., Eastern vs. Western Europe).

  1. Youth Engagement and Mentorship

  • Passion for empowering and mentoring young professionals in public health.

  • Ability to develop and facilitate professional development programs, workshops, and networking opportunities for EUPHAnxt members.

  • Familiarity with youth leadership models and practices within international or regional contexts.

  1. Cultural Awareness and Adaptability

  • Comfortable working in a multicultural environment, with sensitivity to different cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Fluent in English; proficiency in other European languages is an advantage.

  • You are based in the WHO European region.

Key responsibilities

  • Coordinate the EUPHAnxt team consising of a Communication manager, EPH Conference manager, Outreach manager and Talent manager and have regular meetings.

  • The EUPHAnxt coordinator has a seat in the EUPHA Executive Council. The Council meets at least three times a year:

  • March (online meeting of 2 hours)

  • June in the host country of the EPH Conference. Generally two days including programme planning meeting. EUPHA office books accommodation. Travel is to be organised by the coordinator and costs will be reimbursed.

  • November during the EPH Conference as well as attending the conference. EUPHA office offers a waived registration and books/pays for accommodation. Travel is to be organised by the coordinator and costs will be reimbursed.

  • Attend the February lunch-to-lunch Section Council meeting in Utrecht. EUPHA office books accommodation. Travel is to be organised by the coordinator and costs will be reimbursed.

  • Organise a EUPHAnxt event at the conference for young attenders.

  • Organise an event for the European Public Health week EUPHW in May each year.

  • Coordinate the mentoring programme

Advantages of becoming the EUPHAnxt coordinator

  • It provides an excellent opportunity to expand your network under the auspices of EUPHA.

  • It will grant you visibility in the EUPHA network and the chance to put your topic on the agenda of the EUPHA tools (e.g. EJPH articles or columns, EPH Conferences, and EUPHA webinars).

  • You can be invited to attend European meetings on behalf of EUPHA (EUPHA will reimburse travel and other expenses).

  • You can organize workshops to the European Public Health Conference at no cost.

  • Breaking down silos: Maximizing the impact of different EU funding schemes in health (12:20-12:45)

Be sure to register for the welcome reception, which is scheduled on Wednesday, November 13 from 20:00-21:30. The social evening will take place on Thursday evening from 19:30, including dinner and dance, at Estufa Fria. Registration is required. We will be planning another Join the Network session and an informal social evening. More details will be provided next month!

Sailing the waves of European public health: exploring a sea of innovation is the main theme for the conference. Just as explorers once set sail to discover new worlds, we, as public health professionals, embark on a journey of innovation and discovery in our field. We seek to push the boundaries, discover new approaches, and chart the course for the future of public health in Europe. Sub-themes of the EPH Conference 2024 include:

  • Global health

The pre-conference programme, which takes place Monday, November 11 and Tuesday, November 12, will include the following themes: cancer prevention; health literacy; European Health Data Space; Artificial Intelligence; digital health; strategic foresight methodology; behavioural and cultural insights; social security, work and health; prevention and preparedness; syndromic surveillance systems; enhancing your writing skills; and future health scenarios. The Joint Action is organising a hybrid event bringing together all participants, stakeholders and policy makers in Brussels (Belgium) on 28 and 29 November.
