Reflections on past EUPHAnxt activities
Over the past few months, several EUPHA sections have hosted mid-term conferences, and we are proud to highlight the involvement of youth representatives serving as Rapporteurs. These included the International HIA Conference in Madrid, organised by the EUPHA Health Impact Assessment Section, and the 1st European Public Health Economics Conference in Palermo, organised by the EUPHA Public Health Economics Section. We extend our sincere thanks to EUPHA and its sections for these valuable opportunities and encourage everyone to stay alert for upcoming chances to get involved. Read below to learn more about Melissa and Giuseppe’s experiences, EUPHAnxt’s amazing Rapporteurs.

“As the Communication co-lead for the Young World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA), I was grateful to be given the opportunity by the EUPHA HIA Section to serve as a Rapporteur during the conference. It was a valuable and rewarding experience that allowed me to follow key discussions more closely and reflect on the current priorities in Health Impact Assessment. The deep engaging discussions that I witnessed reflect on the diverse practices across regions, which helped us better understand the evolving landscape of Health Impact Assessment (HIA). I was particularly impressed by the emphasis on capacity building, from tailored training frameworks to institutional collaboration, and how essential these efforts are for strengthening HIA implementation.
What also stood out most for me was the importance of making HIA accessible and adaptable to different contexts, whether through legislation, voluntary integration, or partnership across sectors. I also appreciated the discussions around building sustained competency, not just through one-off training, but through ongoing support, mentorship, and knowledge sharing.
This experience truly reinforced my belief in the value of inclusive dialogue and the need to continue building bridges between health, environment, and policy.”

“Attending the 1st European Public Health Economics Conference in Palermo has been an incredibly enriching experience.Throughout the event, I had the chance to engage with passionate professionals and academics, whose contributions sparked meaningful discussions on climate change, health inequalities, and complex health challenges, all approached with rigorous scientific thinking and a deep sense of purpose. Topics such as mental health, obesity, and maternity care were at the heart of many sessions, highlighting the need for stronger public health strategies to address these pressing issues. Together with climate change, they represent some of the most urgent challenges of our time, and ones we must tackle head-on to build a healthier and more equitable future.
What became increasingly clear is that building networks and fostering ongoing collaboration among professionals is not just valuable, it’s essential. Creating spaces for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collective action is what allows us to lay strong foundations and move from vision to reality.
Working alongside young professionals through EUPHA and EUPHAnxt was particularly inspiring. I was deeply impressed by the passion, competence, and proactive spirit of the younger generation. Their contributions during the conference reaffirmed how vital it is to invest in young voices, they are already shaping the present of public health, and will continue to lead its future.
I am sincerely grateful to EUPHA – European Public Health Association, EUPHAnxt, and the organisers João Vasco Santos and Vanessa Gorasso for this opportunity and for their continuous support. I’m proud to be part of such a meaningful and impactful community, and I warmly encourage others to join us in this journey. Now more than ever, focusing on public health to support people’s lives is key to shaping a fairer, more sustainable world. Public health economics has a crucial role to play in bringing more humanity into the systems that govern our lives.”
–Giuseppe Castiglione
