EUPHA is proud to contribute to the European Commission’s European Internal Security Strategy in collaboration with the Global Law Enforcement and Public Health Association (GLEPHA). Together, we advocate for a prevention-first, evidence-based approach that places public health at the core of security policy.
Why is this important?
The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and the spread of misinformation have highlighted vulnerabilities in Europe’s security landscape. A strong and equitable security strategy must recognize that protecting public health is essential for maintaining peace and stability.
Key recommendations
- We have outlined several priority areas to ensure that public health is fully integrated into the EU Internal Security Strategy:
- Integrate public health into security policies to promote equity-driven, climate-conscious decision-making.
- Recognize climate security and biodiversity as essential security priorities.
- Strengthen the public health workforce to enhance crisis response and resilience.
- Develop cross-sector EU frameworks for coordinated health-security responses.
- Support local resilience hubs that bring together communities, public health professionals, and security forces.
- Address socio-economic disparities to reduce security risks and vulnerabilities.
- Create joint training programs for law enforcement and public health professionals to improve cooperation.
- Combat misinformation by enforcing stronger regulations on digital platforms.
Security is not just about borders – it is about people, communities, and resilience. By integrating public health into the European Internal Security Strategy, we can build a safer, more prepared, and more equitable future.
