Dear colleagues,

We are sending you the April update from the EUPHA Health Services Research (HSR) Section.

It is wonderful to see that many of us are actively submitting abstracts to EPH 2026. There is still time until 1st of May 2026, 18:00 CET.

Over the past month we have been working on several upcoming HSR Section activities, including two online sessions during European Public Health Week, the EUPHA-THSR Spring School, the HSR Mid-Term Conference and a Community Engagement Day, all taking place in Berlin between 22 and 26 June 2026. Applications are open.

The EUPHA-THSR Spring School, “Translational Health Services Research Methods 2026: Health, Care and Information Pathways for Strengthening Health and Care Systems”, will focus on measuring, evaluating and designing pathways to strengthen people-centred care and improve population health. During the first three days, participants will work in teams and will be guided in applying selected methodologies to specific research projects. They will present the results of their work at the EUPHA-HSR Mid-Term Conference. During this week in Berlin, participants will have the opportunity to network and connect with a growing HSR community. Social activities and site visits will also be offered. More details on the agenda will be shared in the May newsletter.

We look forward to seeing many of you in person in Berlin during the last week of June.

Best regards,

Lorena Dini, lorena.dini@charite.de and Filippo Quattrone, f.quattrone@santannapisa.it

Translational Health Services Research Methods (THSR) Spring School – Second Edition
Monday 22 to Friday 26 June 2026, Berlin
Free of charge, applications open, limited capacity

The THSR Spring School, “Translational Health Services Research Methods 2026: Health, Care and Information Pathways for Strengthening Health and Care Systems”, will be hosted in Berlin, Germany, from 22 to 26 June 2026. It is organised by EUPHA-HSR and supported by the Working Group Health Policy and Systems Research and Innovation (WG HPSRI), the International Health Services Research Group of the German Network of Health Services Research (IHSR-DNVF), and the ASPHER Task Force on Economic Evaluation and Health Equity (EEHE Task Force).

The EUPHA-THSR Spring School is a five-day in-person meeting for PhD students, public health researchers and practitioners who would like to deepen their skills in research methods focusing on patient health, care and information pathways.

The aims of the EUPHA-THSR Spring School are:

  • to understand current initiatives on the design, measurement and evaluation of health, care and information pathways;
  • to apply these methods to exploring pathways in specific projects;
  • to deepen skills in communicating science and presenting findings to professional audiences and the public.

During the first three days, participants will work in teams and will be guided in applying selected methodologies to specific research projects. They will be expected to present the results of their group work during the EUPHA-HSR Mid-Term Conference (day four) to a professional audience and during the Community Engagement Day (day five) to the interested public. This will also be an opportunity to network and connect with other HSR community members.

HSR Section events during European Public Health Week (EPHW)

Mental health challenges are shaped by complex interactions between social, community and healthcare systems, and disproportionately affect vulnerable and in-need populations. In recent years, mental health has gained visibility in health services research in Germany.

The EUPHA Health Services Research Section (HSR) warmly invites public health experts, researchers and interested members of the public to participate, free of charge, in two brief online sessions on 6 May 2026, EUPHW Day 3: “Mental health at the crossroads: investing across public health, primary health care and communities”.

Session 1: Hot Topics in Mental Health Care Research in Germany: Primer for the DNVF Forum “Rising Numbers, Growing Demand – Health Services Research in Mental Health”

In this brief session, the President of the EUPHA Health Services Research Section, Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Lorena Dini, will introduce the topic and discuss it with the President of the German Network for Health Services Research (DNVF), Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Hoffmann. The focus will be on the current status of health services research in mental health in Germany and the expected implications of the 2026 DNVF Forum on “Rising Numbers, Growing Demand – Health Services Research in Mental Health”.
