EUPHA’s Environment and Health Section and the CliMent COST Action

We were delighted to host a thought-provoking webinar “Connecting Climate, Mental Health, and Public Health” in September, and we’re excited to deepen our collaboration with the CliMent COST Action moving forward.

Together COST Action and EUPHA’s Environment and Health Section, we explored the vital intersections between climate change, mental health, and public health. Experts from across Europe shared insights, research, and strategies to address both the emotional and systemic impacts of the climate crisis.

We look forward to building on this momentum and amplifying our joint efforts in the months ahead.

Symposium on the ICJ Climate Change Advisory Opinion: What’s Next? A Proposal for a UN General Assembly Special Session on Climate Change

In the wake of the International Court of Justice’s landmark advisory opinion on climate change, a recent proposal published on Opinio Juris calls for a UN General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) to advance human rights-based climate action. The ICJ opinion affirmed that states are legally obligated to mitigate climate change and address its impacts, including through human rights frameworks. The proposed UNGASS would offer a platform to adopt a “Declaration of Commitment to Climate Action,” complementing existing climate treaties and establishing accountability mechanisms—such as periodic reporting by the UN Secretary-General—to ensure progress. This initiative reflects growing momentum to integrate legal and human rights obligations into global climate governance.
