Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to our section events to be held during the 14th European Public Health Conference between 10-12 November 2021. Our workshops will attempt to highlight the opportunities, challenges and risks arising from the pandemic and will facilitate conversations on addressing the gaps in injury prevention and safety promotion. We encourage young researchers, community workers, policy makers, academics, and public health practitioners to register and join the discussions.

Pre-conference: Safety challenges and altered injury patterns in Europe during COVID-19 and beyond

The aim of the workshop is to discuss intentional and unintentional injury risks and safety promotion issues during the global COVID-19 pandemic. It starts with the discussion of perceived risk and risk communication and their relationship with the adoption of proper preventive behaviours in the times of pandemic. Safety at home and during leisure time, violence and suicide prevention, occupational safety, injuries in vulnerable target groups (children and elderly) remain in the focus of this workshop, as well as prevention and safety strategies.

Workshop: Injury epidemiology, treatment, costs and legislation during the COVID-19 pandemic

Friday 12 November 2021, Time: 11:30-12:30 CET, Room L

The workshop aims to discuss the effect of COVID-19 lockdown on the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of injuries, as well as the barriers of maintaining (or even improving) data quality during the different phases of the pandemic. The w orkshop will further discuss hospital demand and will identify the challenges for the health systems in handling the complex needs of vulnerable patients under serious restrictions. The workshop will also highlight the legal and regulatory measures taken and their level of efficacy in promoting free movement of workers within EU but also the right to work guaranteed under ECHR and ILO Conventions and Declaration. The high human and societal costs as well as inequalities of injury mortality and burden will be highlighted based on comparisons with long-term trends. The workshop will contribute to the identification of evidence-informed strategies and will promote effective planning and optimization of health services response for future pandemics.

Workshop: New working environments, occupational risks and socioeconomic inequalities during covid-19 pandemic

Wednesday 10 November 2021, Time: 16:10-17:10 CET, Room: K

The workshop will attempt to map the work patterns that emerged during the covid-19 pandemic and to highlight the opportunities, challenges and risks arising from the new working environments. Health, economic and social impacts of new employment arrangements will be discussed with emphasis on systemic and structural factors increasing inequalities. Social protection gaps will be highlighted in line with human rights and international labour standards. The workshop will further discuss how to take advantage of the extensive potential of innovative tools and forms of work with regard to employee health and safety. Public policies, legislative initiatives and innovative ways of responding to the challenges will be presented. The workshop will conclude with policy recommendations taking into account the future of work that will be shaped due to COVID-19.
